What is Burnout and How to Prevent It

Last week we mentioned burnout in our fireside chat and I realised that we don’t talk about burnout or how to prevent it enough.

Burnout is the state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. It can impact all areas of your life and can even cause physical symptoms such as a weakened immune system which will leave you prone to catching colds, flus and various other illnesses which may linger longer than usual, increased heart rate and insomnia.

Self-Care is the act of taking care of yourself, so you’re able to manage whatever life throws at you. It’s emotionally recharging preparing you to be the best that you can be. It’s especially important now more than ever with Covid raging on in the world around us and with that bringing so much uncertainty. Regular self-care can help us decrease our risks of burnout and reaching breaking point. Just like we need sleep and to eat healthy for our physical health, we need to do self-care for our emotional health.

Lessons From the Olympics

I can't believe that the Olympics are almost over and while I am not normally a sports person I have really enjoyed watching Australia compete. Seeing people break records, their personal bests, sportsmanship and that despite the challenges of Covid things running smoothly. 

Watching the athletes compete has shown me that there are lessons we can take from seeing them compete.

Routines in Lockdown

If you’ve been watching Bart’s lockdown vlogs you might’ve noticed that every morning, he makes himself a cup of coffee, takes the time to enjoy the process and uses it as a chance to mentally prepare for the day ahead. This has gotten me thinking about how we all have those little routines we do that keep us grounded. Whether that is spending the time making a cup of coffee and enjoying it, going for a walk, or just reading a book before bed. These are the things we do throughout the day that hold us steady, the routines we rely on during hard times and help us as the world changes around us.
